And a roof window creates a much more modern appearance than a traditional dormer ever could.
Will I need planning permission to install a fixed roof window?
In most cases planning permission is not required. There are some exceptions though. If the roof window will visibly protrude above the established plane of the roof you may need planning permission. And, if the home is a Listed Building or is located in a Conservation Area you will almost certainly need planning permission.
Do flat roof windows leak?
Not if they are installed properly. This is why it’s important that you find a contractor with lots of prior experience installing roof windows. They’re out there, although you may have to spend a day or two researching different contractors and checking their references.
Can a fixed roof window be converted into one that opens?
In theory, yes. But in practice it would require so much time and expense that if you really want to transition to roof windows that open it’s a smarter, more cost-effective choice to just replace the entire window. This points to the need to think carefully before choosing what type of roof window you want to install.
What size roof window will I need?
This is up to you, but we generally recommend that the total sunlight allowed into the room over the course of a day by the roof window should add up to at least 10% of the floor area of the space. If your roof can accommodate a roof window that will cover 20% of the floor space, even better.

As of this writing we do not offer an installation service for the roof windows we sell. We can, however, provide you with the names of some contractors that will do a reliable job installing your roof windows at a competitive price.
