Frequently Asked Questions
Do roof windows have to be installed from the outside?
The good news is that if you want to avoid having a lot of scaffolding on the outside of your home most roof windows can be installed just fine from inside. The downside to this type of installation is that it will have a bigger impact on goings on inside the house than if the window was installed from the outside. That said, an experienced contractor should be able to install a roof window in a single day so any disruptions will be short-lived.
What type of roof window is right for my house?
It will depend in large part on the type of roof you want to install the roof window on. If the roof is flat or only has a few degrees of pitch then you’ll want to install a flat roof window. If, on the other hand, the roof above the space you have in mind has a steep pitch to it you’ll want to install a pitched roof window. You will also have to decide whether you want your roof windows to open or if you want them to be fixed in place.
Will I need planning permission to install a roof window?
Most of the time roof windows can be installed without the need for planning permission. However, there are some notable exceptions. For instance, if the roof window you want to install will stick up above the established roof line you may need planning permission. Also, planning permission is almost always required for homes located in Conservation Areas and for Listed Buildings.
Do roof windows leak?
Not if they are installed properly. This is why it is so important that you hire a qualified contractor to handle the installation for you. Choose someone with plenty of experience installing skylights and roof windows and who has plenty of references you can check. If the roof around the window starts to leak after installation make sure you have the contractor back as soon as possible to fix the problem before damage occurs to your roof or the inside of your home.
Can you install my roof windows for me?
We do not offer installation services for the roof windows we sell. We do, however, provide detailed installation instructions for each window that you can use to install the window yourself or which you can pass on to your contractor to make sure the job is done right.
