Frequently Asked Questions

Which is better: a fixed rooflight or a dormer?

It depends on what you want from the new roof window. If your goal is simply to optimise the amount of light coming into the space below, or you are intent on bolstering a modern, minimalist architectural design, a fixed rooflight is the way to go. On the other hand, if you want to maintain a traditional appearance and increase the amount of headroom in a space you may want a dormer. But don’t forget that a dormer will cost several times more than a fixed rooflight.

Will a flat rooflight leak?

If it is installed properly and well-maintained and it is not damaged by falling branches or flying debris then a flat rooflight should never leak. It is important that the contractor you hire to install the rooflight has prior experience doing so. If they don’t you should take a pass and keep looking until you find one that does. If necessary we can help you locate a qualified contractor.

Can I convert a fixed rooflight into one that opens later on?

In theory, there is nothing to prevent someone from doing so. But why bother? The time and money necessary to convert the rooflight would be much more than it would cost to simply buy and install one that opens.

Do I need planning permission?

If any part of the fixed rooflight will extend above the highest point on the existing roof you may need planning permission. If the rooflight will rise more than 15cm above the existing roof plane you may also need planning permission. (But that’s unlikely to be the case.) Finally, if your home or business is a listed building you will definitely need planning permission. Likewise, if the structure is located in a conservation area.

Do you offer installation?

Unfortunately, we do not currently offer an installation service. We can, however, recommend contractors in your area with experience installing this type of rooflight. You are also free to choose your own contractor or to install the fixed rooflight yourself, although we would not recommend that unless you have copious experience performing complex roof work.

Do your products come with a warranty?

Yes, they do. Every one of the fixed rooflights we sell comes with a 10-year manufacturer’s warranty on materials and build quality so you can rest easy.
