Frequently Asked Questions
I’ve heard that opening skylights leak. Is that true?
It may be true of a particular skylight on a particular home, but in general, if the skylight is properly installed and maintained you should not have an issue with water leakage. When leakage issues do occur it is usually because of a DIY installation, or because the skylight was not closed entirely or because it was struck by a falling branch or other item.
Is Brett Martin a trusted brand?
Brett Martin have been in business since 1958 and are well-regarded throughout the UK building industry for producing high-quality skylights and rooflights of every type and description. You can be certain the Brett Martin skylights you purchase from us are of the highest quality and will live up to their reputation.
Will I need planning permission to install opening skylights?
Not every skylight installation will require planning permission. Whether yours does will depend on whether the following conditions are met:
1. If the skylight will rise above the highest point on the roof you will likely need planning permission.
2. If the opening skylight will protrude more than 150mm above the established roof plane you will probably need planning permission.
3. If your home or business is in a conservation area, or it is a listed building you will almost certainly need to obtain planning permission.
It should be noted that in most cases obtaining planning permission for the installation of opening skylights is little more than a formality. Still, the process must be respected.
Can you install my new opening skylights for me?
As of this writing, we do not offer installation services for the opening skylights we sell. Keep in mind, however, that all of our Brett Martin opening skylights come with detailed installation instructions. You can pass these on to the contractor of your choice, or, if you have experience performing complex roof work yourself, you can perform the installation using the instructions. In most cases, however, strongly caution against installing the skylights yourself. Use a pro. That’s what they’re for.
How long do skylights last?
That will depend on a variety of factors, including who did the installation and whether the skylight was properly maintained. But in general, you can expect a well-installed and well-maintained skylight to last 20 – 30 years.
Do your opening skylights come with a warranty?
Of course. All Brett Martin opening skylights come with the company’s warranty which covers materials and build quality.
